ASUS Nexus 7 Android Tablet Hands-on Review

There was a time when Google was mere a search engine and now it has come to a position wherein it’s making the smartphone giants design the phones based on the Operating System called Android which is of Google Inc. Coming to the present from past, today Google has state of the art smartphone and tablet under its belt under the flagship brand called as “nexus”. The best of Google now comes in three different sizes which are in 4.7 inches, 7 inches and in 10 inches of screen size. We will review it as in when these devices are here with us as these devices are to be launched in November 2013. The best part is that it now has received the latest Jellybean 4.2 firmware of which we have also mentioned a video. The reason on why we have mentioned video is to help you know on what exactly changed from Jellybean 4.1 to Jellybean 4.2 firmware as a whole new wave of apps are accommodated in this firmware.
With the recent launch of Nexus 7 tablet which was designed by Google and manufactured by ASUS was the first ever tablet revealed by Google and oh boy this tablet has stunned everyone and especially Apple as this made Apple to come up with Apple iPad mini which will be commercially launched very soon. All thanks to Google as the best of Google can be experienced with three new products, nexus smartphone, nexus 7 tablet and the latest nexus 10 tablet. So, in this article let’s check out on what Nexus 7 has it!
Design, Form Factor and Display
Google and “Plastic” seems to have an age old relationship which someday it will have to break it or else its Google’s credibility as risk. In the recent event hosted by Apple, it clearly lashed out at Google for using not up to the mark hardware. Also, many users will agree to the fact that when Google’s ASUS Tablet is compared with the likes of Apple iPad, we can make out the same.
Considering the fact that Google has priced this tablet for a mere $199. If you ever thought that why the backside of the ASUS Nexus 7 is having a dotted back cover then this is because Matias Duarte wanted to replicate the “Steve McQueen style” driving gloves which too is of same design. This 7 incher feels much more-lighter than any other table as it just weighs 340 gms and due to fiber material it feels much lighter than any other.

At the bottom part of the tablet, Nexus 7 has got a micro USB port and then on the right side it has got a Volume rocker keys which is neatly placed along with the power / sleep button . Coming to the left of the tablet, it has got a pogo plug for placement of the dock. On the front, just above the screen there is a 1.2 MP front facing camera is housed just inside the bezel.
This tablet comes with a thickness of .41 inches and measures 7.8 inches in height with a 4.7 inches of width. The best part is that the whole eco system of this tablet is built in such a way that it not just feels lighter but also feels like a tablet which is more compact to hold, in short it actually feels good when we hold this one. Now, this may sound lame but actually..
Though the screen is not one of the brightest when compared to the HD Super AMOLED display but yes this one comes with the IPS Screen which is comparable with the AMOLED Displays. The good part of the IPS Screens is that it consumes less power than compared to the AMOLED Screens, all thanks to the compromised lumens. If you were getting used to Android feeling like a complete OS, this will reinforce that feeling.
Technical / Hardware Engineering:
Google and ASUS undoubtedly has put in a lot of Engineering into this one as this one comes with one of the latest and best quad-core Tegra 3 CPU which is capable of processing 1.3 GHz speeds. This one also comes with 1GB of RAM, onboard option of 8, 16 and 32GB* memory space. We just hope that someday it will come up with a micro SD Card slot as till now Google hasn’t come up with a micro sd card slot in its nexus line up. Apart from above, nexus 7 also comes with the latest Bluetooth 4.0 standard, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n standard and also has the GPS chip, nfc and not to forget a front facing camera of 1.2 MP. With the arrival of Nexus 7, Google marks its hardware presence across one more hardware manufacturer which is ASUS and surprisingly for Google, ASUS came in with one of the best
Nexus 7 comes with an IPS LCD Display which comes with a resolution of 1280 x 800, Corning glass with a 216 ppi (pixels per inch) which is good enough to turn all the content shown on the screen crisp as per Google. The only sad part is that in 8GB / 16GB variant there is no feature of HSPA+ Support or say Sim Card slot for accessing 3G. It’s only 32 GB variant which comes with the WI Fi + 3G Support from Google. With 4400 Mah battery power strength, this tablet has got fair amount of battery love from ASUS as it can last for good 9 – 10 hours for normal usage on a full charge.

Nexus 7 comes with the Scratch-resistant Corning glass with a backlit IPS Display. As per the engineers of Google, it has ensured that all the technical aspects were considered so as to keep the device within the said thickness without compromising the most wanted features and capabilities. The hardware which
The only sad part is that the device doesn’t come with the user replaceable battery which means that device doesn’t come with the removable back cover. Though it comes with the 4325 mAh of battery power which is capable of lasting >8 hrs of battery life as per the Google Sources but we managed to get around 6 hours of uninterrupted internet surfing. As we mentioned that the hardware quality is a little cause of concern with the NEXUS 7 as it feels very plasticky, no doubt everyone will be comparing Nexus 7 with the Apple iPad Mini.

Google undoubtedly had put in the latest hardware in place for nexus 7 but unfortunately technology upgrades every single day and no doubt it’s a huge challenge for everyone to hit the production line in the least possible time. To think ahead of time too itself an art in itself and Google has done it again undoubtedly with its Nexus 7 device. Just days after Apple announced its recent Apple iPad mini 7 incher tablet, Google too has announced it’s up scaled Nexus 7 which now comes with 32 GB of storage space along with the HSPA capability which means that you can now make use of Sim cad for 3G data plans. Though there is no Dialer yet for this device, but custom ROM makers are working hard to come up with the same which is expected soon once the HSPA+ model arrives in November.
Security:
Google believes in incorporating highest level of security standards and with Google Nexus 7, it has done the same by coming up with various modes for locking / unlocking the device. Not just with the help of swipe but also it takes much more to unlock the device as it comes with the most advanced options like “Face Unlock” and also Face unlock with voice security features along with PIN, password and pattern unlock options. The newer Jellybean 4.2 comes with an added security features which will be further enhanced when Jellybean 4.2.1 which will be soon rolled out in the coming days. With advanced on screen lock features, this one is one of the most secure devices as not to forget it also supports the latest Exchange 2013 in the Enterprise level. So, next time when you wish to configure your corporate email in your device, you can very well do the same with the help of Exchange Active Sync Option.
Camera & Quadrant Ranks:
Though there is no rear / back camera which is bit annoying for such a powerful device, this one comes with a front facing camera of 1.2 MP which can’t be remarked as an awesome camera. The pictures from the front camera can only be used for video calling apps but all thanks to Asus and Google for at least coming with the front camera. Not the best of the optics when compared with the Apple iPad mini but yes if you don’t have an iPad, you don’t have it. Also, not to forget, the Google + Hangout is the best thing which you can do with the front camera.
We just hope that in the next Google Nexus 7 version, the rear camera makes in. Be it Vallamo, Quadrant, GLB or some other tests, Nexus 7 managed to rank ahead in most of the tests when compared to the likes of Galaxy Tabs and ASUS’s transformer primeCamera is again an impressive thing in the latest Jellybean 4.2 firmware as it comes with almost all the new never seen features which also includes the Video Stitching capability punched in the Panorama mode. The new camera of Jellybean is a new favourite app which every smartphone user would love to have it in their smartphone. As we said earlier, the only sad part is that the Nexus 7 doesn’t come up with the rear camera.
Software (Updates Served HOT by Google):
From hardware part to now software front, ASUS 7 will never face issues related to the firmware updates, all thanks to the Google’s Love towards the NEXUS devices which makes sure that even the legacy devices like the nexus S or say Galaxy NEXUS users never had to wait long for getting the latest updates. Currently the firmware is the latest 4.1.2 but yes this nexus 7 will be updated with the latest 4.2 Jellybean firmware and yes officially. You don’t need to chug through hundreds of forums to root and install custom Rom firmwares which are unofficial to experience the goodness of Jellybean 4.2 in your Google ASUS Nexus 7 tablet. Though, initially we felt that there wasn’t much which transformed from ICS to jellybean but yes when we compared ICS Android 4.0.4 with the latest Jellybean 4.2, there are an array of changes which has come to the notice not just on the version front mathematically but also on the features and experience front. Jelly Bean does seem smoother and cleaner than ICS as it ropes in the magic of few customizations which are really impressive and is a further polished version of ICS Android 4.0 firmware version.

Everyone expected Key Lime Pie to get unveiled very soon but wasn’t the case unfortunately. But yes the next version will surely be pushed to Nexus 7 which Google has confirmed unofficially which should leave a smile on your face if you are a proud Nexus 7 owner as other tablet manufacturers are not that bothered of rolling frequent / latest updates for their devices. Google Now powers the device and propels with an all new innovation wherein it pulls out all important data from your mails and other apps so as to give you alerts about your meetings, air tickets and also you can track your shipments just with one touch.
There are a bunch of Google Apps like Navigation, Books and Music which are here to completely redesign all your multimedia experience into a much more centralized manner with the help of Google Account. Google Navigation is just an extension of Google Maps which further helps you to navigate to the destination from your current destination enabling the features like turn- by – turn navigation. With Google Books, you can completely forget the Kindle Fire devices as Google is working hard to increase its books database though Kindle is still a leader in terms of Digital Books database. With Google Music, you can upload all your personal music on cloud so that you can then access the same right on your Nexus 7 / Android device, it helps you to save space by storing music on cloud. To listen the same, you will have to have an active internet access as it will fetch the music from cloud.
If you talk of apps which are there by default on the device, then there are not so many apps in Nexus 7device out of the box but all thanks to default stock apps which otherwise can’t be deleted on non-rooted devices. Otherwise, the overall performance of the firmware is pretty much smooth and we never felt lag even after installing round about 35 odd applications which again is the best part. Though the features like pinch to zoom, TW interface and all are missing since they are of Samsung, you will have to sacrifice all these. Also, another thing is FM Radio which Nexus devices still doesn’t come up with. For $199, this is all you can expect. Irrespective of what version Google ropes in, history says that Google updates all its flagship devices to the latest Android firmwares.

While Google had taken a major leap from Android 4.0 ice Cream Sandwich to the latest Jellybean 4.2 firmware, it will be interesting to watch on how Google slugs it out in terms of new feature addition in the coming Android versions to come. The next possible Android version may be dubbed as Android 5.0 “Key lime PIE”. Though there is no ETA on by when there will be an official roll out but it’s expected to get unveiled wither in Q42012 or in Q12013 which seems very evident. It will be very interesting to see on what will be the new features in Android 5.0 “Key lime PIE”.
The types of files which can be opened in your Nexus 7 can be of formats ranging from DOC/DOCX/DOT/DOTX/RTF/TXT (Word), XLS/XLSX/CSV, (Excel) PPT/PPTX/PPS/PPSX/POT/POTX (PowerPoint) & PDF. Full credits to an amazing world of Google PLAY Store with which you can enjoy over a whopping 6, 75, 000 apps and still counting. With stunning looks and amazing interface of various applications, you can make the most out of your Nexus 7 device. Google truly believes in “Customer First” and on the similar lines, Google never forgets to roll out he updates even for the legacy devices. Over a period of years, Google has proven the same and on the similar lines, it has also announced that Google Nexus 7 is Jellybean 4.2 ready and it will be receiving its update in late November 2012 officially.
When we talk of updates, we can’t rule out the fact that custom ROM developers are too working hard to get the latest updates so that users can make the most out of their devices in terms of not just latest apps but also with the help of apps which only be used after tooting the device. Rooting basically gives access to the third party apps so that the required customizations can be done.
When it comes to Google’s Nexus 7, there are few things which actually hurts being an Android / Google diehard fan and am sure many of the Android fans that Nexus devices still misses the action of Micro SD Card slots and FM Radio. With the induction of these two main core features, Google can actually fight out the battle as it has been found that most of the tablets have been purposely not infusing all the available options in one with a fear that if one such tablet is launched which is full of features, it may hit the future innovations and sales.
Final Verdict:
Though there is an all new version which will soon be retailing in the market which is a HSPA+ and 32GB of King Size storage. This tablet is placed well above the latest offerings from Amazon Kindle Fire devices but slightly lack off the fire when compared with the Apple iPad mini. Though we still recommend that latest Google Nexus 7 with HSPA+ and 32 GB onboard memory, this Nexus 7 device with 8GB / 16GB variants are not worth buying considering that you are now getting a 3G + Wi Fi model powered with 32GB Space will be arriving starting November 13 2012.
For Immediate Buyers:
To make things simple, if you are actually looking for a 7 incher tablet for reading or for light usage of multimedia then Nexus 7 is the best device., But just in case if you are a die-hard Apple fan who is well versed with all the limitations of Apple iTunes and what not, then it’s better for you to choose Apple iPad mini.
For Wait & Watch Type Users:
If you are the one who would like to wait till a new 7 incher is announced, then it’s better to buy one today as we don’t see any immediate launches either from Google or Apple near about till 6 months considering the fact that both have unleashed the latest range of its 7 incher stars.
No doubt, this is the first from Google and it will reimagine a better version of 7-inched tablet in the coming days to come as there are many more versions of Android which will be soon knocking the doors. Do share with us in the comments section about all your thoughts as we will be more than happy to hear from you.
