How to Root Nexus 7 Android 4.2 JOP40C Jelly Bean and Install CWM Recovery


Today is an important day for all the users with a Nexus device. Android 4.2 Jelly Bean has been released today and Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2 JOP40C software update andAndroid 4.2 for Nexus 7 is already available. We have also written about how to root Galaxy Nexus with Android 4.1.2, and now here is a tutorial on how to root Nexus 7 with Android 4.2 jelly Bean and also install ClockworkMod Recovery.Your bootloader on Nexus 7 should be unlocked. Now, we will first flash a custom recovery on Nexus 7 tablet and then root it on Android 4.2 JOP40C.

Make sure you have installed all your USB drivers for the Nexus 7 tablet to connect it with the computer. Download Nexus 7 USB drivers! Apart from just the USB drivers, there are a few more things that you need to take care of.

How to Flash CWM Recovery & Root Nexus 7 on Android 4.2

We have put together a detailed step-by-step instructions guide on how to root Nexus 7 on Android 4.2 JOP40C. If you are used to rooting Google Nexus devices, then this should not be any different for you.
Please read every line carefully and make sure you read the tutorial once before actually performing it on your Android device.
To Remember:
  • This root method tutorial is only for Nexus 7. Please don’t try this on any other variants of the tablet.
  • Your tablet should be on Android 4.2 JOP40C software version.
  • Make sure you backup all your data in your phone before proceeding.
Complete Step-By-Step Instructions:
Step 1 - Download Android SDK from the Android Developers website and install with USB drivers. See: How to Set Up Android SDK (Fastboot / ADB) on Windows.
Step 2 - Enable USB Debugging mode in your Nexus 7 tablet.
Step 3 - Download Fastboot and extract it in android-sdk-windows\platform-toolsdirectory. Create directory if not already there.
NOTE: Skip Steps 1, 2, 3 if you already have them.
Step 4 - Download SuperSU v0.97 (CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip) and copy it to your \sdcard on your Nexus 7 tablet.
Step 5 - Make sure you have backup your data as it will be removed. Then switch OFF your Nexus 7.
Step 6 - Download recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.1.0-grouper.img and copy/paste it in the android-sdk-windows\platform-tools directory.
Step 7 - Now go into Fastboot Mode on Nexus 7. How? Press Volume Down + Power keys for a few seconds till you see some text on the screen. This is Bootloader Mode.
Step 8 - Navigate to android-sdk-windows\platform-tools directory and open Command Prompt (Shift + Right-click > Open Command Prompt).
Step 9 - Type in the following command and press Enter.
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.1.0-grouper.img
Step 10 - Once completed, choose RECOVERY from the Fastboot menu and enter Recovery Mode.
Step 11 - Then scroll down to “flash zip from SD card” and press the Power button to select it.
Step 12 - Press the Power button again and select “choose zip from sdcard”.
Step 13 - Now using your volume keys, navigate to the CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zipfile that you copied to your SD card and select it using the Power button. Confirm the installation on the next screen and the installation procedure should start now.
Step 14 - After the installation completes, go to “+++++Go Back” and reboot the phone by selecting “reboot system now” from the recovery menu. The phone will boot now.
That’s it. Your Nexus 7 is now rooted on Android 4.2 JOP40C software version of Jelly Bean and even has a custom CWM recovery installed. Check for the Superuser app in your apps list to verify.
